The Johnson Talulah High Flow Reversible Ballast Pump is hands-down the fastest reversible pump on the market with an impressive speed of 250 pounds per minute!

Johnson Pumps has always been a leader in the marine pump industry but the new Talulah High Flow Ballast Pump takes ballast filling and draining to a whole new level.

Johnson Talulah High Flow Ballast Pump Features

  • Run-Dry Protection: The integrated Run-Dry Protection circuit monitors the temperature of the pump motor, and automatically shuts it off if conditions indicate water is no longer flowing through the pump for more than 30 seconds. This innovative feature helps prevent damage to the expensive motor unit of the pump if it overheats due to running dry.
  • The ignition protected design makes this pump suitable for installation in the bilge compartment of the boat without risk of fire or explosion due to fuel vapors. This feature alone is crucial for safe operation and is one important distinguishing factor between the Ballast Puppy and the Simer pump to which it is often compared.

Pump Properties

  • Fill Rate: 250lbs/min
  • Flow Rate: 1,800 Gallons Per Hour / 30 Gallons Per Minute
  • Physical Dimensions: 9" L x 5.125" W x 3.54" H
  • Connection: 1-1/2" NPTF
  • Self-priming: Yes
  • Safety Features: Ignition Protected

Installation

This pump requires use with 1-1/2" hose and a minimum of 12GA wiring. We suggest using 10GA wiring with a 50amp fuse when installing this pump.

Applications

  • New ballast system installs
  • Retro-fit possible with upgrading the hose, fittings, and electrical as needed

Fast! Need to use with a winch solenoid to handle the amps

It's very fast (I'm using it to fill two 850lb bags, splitting the 1.5" line into two 1" lines), but this is more of a wiring instruction guide than a review.

Because of the high amps temporarily used when the pump is switching directions, you can't run the power directly from the battery to the switch to the pump. Instead, you need to:

1.) Run power to the switch.

2.) Connect the switch to a relay or winch solenoid.

3.) Run power separately to the relay/solenoid (12 gauge). This power line is what the 50 amp fuse is for.

4.) Run power from the relay/solenoid to the pump (12 gauge).

So the switch will just tell the relay/solenoid to switch polarity, and the relay/solenoid will handle the extra amps as it sends the +/- current from the battery to the pump.

It took me a great deal of time to get this figured out, involving numerous solenoid/relay purchases on Amazon and finally resorting to getting help from an electrician (took him about half an hour to figure it out, so I didn't feel as dumb). I ended up using a "winch solenoid", because the design is simpler than a relay and it's more sturdy. The winch solenoid I ended up using is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P1W3YM4 but there are a whole bunch you can choose from and they behave the same (I actually tested 4 of them when I was having a problem, so I know they work the same)

You do NOT want to use one of the "pre-wired switch connectors" in this case. Those are great for a lower-amp pump that…
